Description

Retzlaff et al reported a number of equations for predicting the red blood cell volume of an adult. The authors are from the University of Minnesota and the Mayo Clinic in Rochester.

Parameters:

(1) gender

(2) height in cm

(3) weight in kilograms

(4) lean body mass in kilograms

(5) body fat in kilograms

(6) body surface area in square meters

(7) sum of three skinfold thicknesses in mm (arm, midaxillary line, subscapular) using round andvils exerting 10 grams per square mm

Parameter

Equations for a Male

weight

26.8 * (weight)

weight

(19.2 * (weight)) + 609

height

(20.6 * (height)) – 1478

height and weight

(8.2* (height)) + (17.3 * (weight)) – 693

surface area

1100 * (surface area)

height, weight, skinfold thickness

(-3.7 * (height)) + (30.5 * (weight)) – (1033.8 * LOG(ST)) + 2216

lean body mass

(38.3 * (lean body mass)) - 272

lean body mass

(34 * (lean body mass))

lean body mass, height and weight

(37.8 * (lean body mass)) - (0.8 * (height)) + (0.7 * (weight)) – 155

lean body mass, body fat

(38 * (lean body mass)) + (0.7* (body fat)) - 269

where:

• The definition for body fat was not given. One option is that it is the value of total body weight minus the lean body weight. Howevere, lean body weight includes some fat so body fat is total body weight minus the fat free body mass.

• The use of LOG10 or LNe was not specified. LOG10 gave appropriate results.
