Description

Hevesi et al reported the Recurrent Instability of the Patella (RIP) score for evaluating a patient with a lateral dislocation of the patella. This can help to identify a patient at risk for recurrence. The authors are from the Mayo Clinic.

Patient selection: after first lateral dislocation

Patient exclusion: chronic patellar subluxation

Parameters:

(1) tibial tubercle to trochlear groove distance (TT-TG)

(2) patellar length (PL)

(3) age of the patient in years

(4) skeletal immaturity (primarily pediatric patients)

(5) trochlear dysplasia (using the Dejour et al classification)

TT-TG to PL ratio =

= (TT to TG) / (PL)

Interpretation:

• minimum score: 0

• maximum score: 5

• The higher the score the greater the risk of recurrent dislocation.
