Description

A patient can have both adrenal insufficiency and thyrotoxicosis. The combination may present as recurrent episodes of adrenal crisis.

The 2 conditions may share a common cause (such as an autoimmune disease), or the patient may have 2 separate processes.

The presence of thyrotoxicosis may be masked by the symptoms of the adrenal crisis, resulting in a delayed diagnosis.

If a patient with Addison's disease has episodes of adrenal crisis, then the patient should be screened for thyrotoxicosis.

If a patient with thyrotoxicosis has multiple episodes that are atypical for thyrotoxicosis, then the patient should be screen for adrenal insufficiency
