Rectal prolapse is a complication that occurs occasionally in children with Shigellosis.
Patient selection: pediatric patient with shigellosis
Risk factors:
(1) children less than 5 years of age
(2) infection with Shigella dysenteriae type 1 (associated with more severe colitis)
(3) other risk factors for rectal prolapse
The prolapsed mucosa needs to be protected from trauma.
Appropriate antibiotic with resolution of the Shigella infection usually results in resolution of the rectal prolapse.
