Description

The Unites States Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) has outlined when to screen a patient for syphilis.


 

Indications to screen for syphilis in an asymptomatic patient:

(1) man who have sex with men

(2) HIV-positive

(3) history of prison incarceration

(4) commercial sex worker

(5) male younger than 29 years

(6) Black, Hispanic, American Indian, Native Alaskan, Native Hawaiian, Pacific Islander

(7) other geographic region (Western or Southern US, metropolitan)

 

where:

• A woman who has sex with a bisexual male might also be worth screening.

 

Other reasons to screen for syphilis:

(1) pregnant female

(2) symptoms suggestive of syphilis
