Description

Viral gastroenteritis can be spread between individuals if precautions are not taken. Preventing the spread of viral gastroenteritis is very important in children and their families.


 

Handwashing:

(1) The patient should wash his/her hands using soap and warm running water.

(2) The hands should be carefully dried on a towel after handwashing.

(3) The hands should be washed after going to the bathroom or changing diapers.

(4) The hands should be washed before eating.

(5) Towels used by the patient should not be shared with others.

 

Social distancing:

(1) A patient with symptoms of gastroenteritis (vomiting, diarrhea) should not go to school or be around other children.

(2) The patient should not return to school or be around other children until 48 hours after the last episode of vomiting or diarrhea.

(3) The patient should not go to a swimming pool until 2 weeks after the last episode of diarrhea.

 

Additional recommendations (not listed in the guideline):

(1) Wash all soiled towels and clothing carefully.

(2) A person handling soiled linen should wash his or her hands afterwards.

(3) Careful cleaning of environmental surfaces can be very important for norovirus and other viruses that can persist in the environment.

(4) Food and utensils of a patient with gastroenteritis should not be shared with others.
