Chan and Chan reviewed different approaches to repair of a femoral hernia. The authors are from Shouldice Hospital in Thornhill, Ontario, which is a referral hospital for abdominal wall hernias.

The first stage in all repairs was a complete inguinal dissection to examine the direct, indirect, interstitial and femoral spaces for hernias.

Clinical Situation

primary femoral hernia

complete groin repair only

recurrent femoral hernia

anterior sublay mesh

concurrent direct inguinal hernia

anterior sublay mesh

previous inguinal hernia repair that is intact

infrainguinal plug

need for concomitant bowel resection

complete groin repair only

perivascular hernia

anterior sublay mesh

excessive tension upon the suture repair suspected

anterior sublay mesh

• An absolute contraindication to mesh repair was concurrent bowel resection.
