Description

A pediatric patient requires a certain amount of a suitable oral rehydration solution (ORS) to maintain proper fluid balance. Armon et al reported a method for determining the daily fluid requirements. The authors are from University of Nottingham, Pinderfields General Hospital and Maudsley Hospital in England.


 

Patient selection: pediatric patient with recent acute gastroenteritis

 

Goal: maintenance fluid requirements of oral rehydration solution

 

Time frame for oral rehydration: 4 hours

 

Parameters:

(1) body weight in kilograms

Fluid Requirements in mL/day

<= 10 kg

100 * (body weight)

10.1 to 20 kg

1000 + (((body weight) - 10) * 50)

> 20 kg

1500 + (((body weight) - 20) * 20)
