Armon et al reported guidelines for managing children with acute diarrhea. These included feeding the infant after starting rehydration. The authors are from University of Nottingham, Pinderfields General Hospital and Maudsley Hospital in England.
Patient selection: infant with diarrhea, with or without vomiting
Feeding can start after rehydration has been started and the child stabilized.
Usual Feeding
During Treatment
breast feeding
continue breast feeding throughout
formula feeding
start after rehydration completed, with formula undiluted
weaned
normal fluids and solids; avoid fatty foods or foods high in simple sugars
