Description

Small hail is interesting but usually harmless. However, large hail can cause considerable damage.


 

A piece of hail 0.75 inch (1.9 cm) in diameter or larger can damage a roof and can probably harm you.

 

If outside in a car, the danger is breaking of the glass.

(1) Get the car into the garage.

(2) If on the road try to stop under an overpass.

 

If outside and not in a vehicle, then trauma to the head and body is an issue.

(1) Try to get under cover.

(2) Do not stand under a tree or next to something metal because of the risk of lightning.

(3) If no shelter is available try to cover the body with a piece of wood. A hardhat would be ideal

(4) If all else fails, try to cover your head with your arms.

 

If inside a house, the acute danger if breaking of glass.

(1) Close the blinds, pull the curtains or do whatever is necessary to keep broken glass from flying into the room.

 

Since hail forms in thunderstorms with high wind condition, it is important to beware of lightning and tornadoes.
