Description

Operation of a snow blower (snow thrower) can result in serious injury.


 

Most common injuries associated with a snow blower:

(1) lacerations

(2) amputations

(3) burns (from fires, electric shock or a hot engine)

(4) mangling injuries of a hand or foot

(5) being struck by something thrown from the chute

 

General recommendations:

(1) Read the instruction manual before operating a snow blower.

(2) Do not insert a hand into the blower chute or between the auger blades to remove snow or debris. Keep hands and feet away from moving parts.

(3) Turn the blower off and let the blades come to a complete stop before trying to clear the blower. Use a stick or other solid object to dislodge any material.

(4) Do not wear loose clothing that may get caught in the rotating auger.

(5) Do not leave the controls of the snow blower unattended or stand in front of the blower while the engine is running.

(6) Maintain safety features for the blower. Do not remove any safety guards or devices.

(7) Be prepared for the blower to recoil or lurch when the motor is turned off or the clutch is engaged.

(8) Do not operate a blower when intoxicated or feeling ill.

(9) Do not touch the engine cowling if the engine has been running as it can be hot enough to cause a serious burn.

(10) Keep children and pets away when operating a snow blower. Do not someone less than 15 years of age operate a snow blower.

(11) Be careful when operating the blower on ice or any slippery surface. Be careful operating the blower on a slope. Be sure that a "dead man's switch" (automatic cutoff if hands removed from control bar) is installed.

(12) Be in reasonable physical shape when operating a snow blower.

(13) Keep the blower in good operating condition with sufficient oil and inflated tires. Repair all mechanical problems prior to operation.

(14) Remove stones, toys and small objects from the area to be cleared.

(15) Wear proper attire when using a snow blower to avoid cold injury. Be sure that vision and hearing are not obscured by scarf or hat.

 

Recommendations for a gas engine:

(1) Do not operate in a closed space where carbon monoxide can accumulate.

(2) Do not fill with gasoline when the engine is hot or if the engine is running. Have a fire extinguisher nearby.

 

Recommendations for an electric engine:

(1) Be aware of the cord position at all times.

(2) Make sure the electric cord is in good condition and connections are secure.
