Every year thousands of participants in sport activities suffer eye injuries. Many of these injuries could be prevented if proper eye protection was worn.


 

Generic features for sports requiring eye protection:

(1) involves use of a ball, puck, racket, bat or other swinging or flying object

(2) physical contact between players

(3) travel at high speed

(4) environmental dirt, dust or debris

 

Sports for which eye protection is recommended include:

(1) softball and baseball

(2) racquetball

(3) tennis

(4) badminton

(5) soccer

(6) football

(7) ice or street hockey

(8) basketball

(9) lacrosse

(10) archery

(11) fencing

(12) martial arts (boxing, karate, etc.)

(13) downhill bicycle or dirt bike racing

(14) skiing

(15) shooting

(16) lumberjacking

 

Sports participants for whom eye protection should be mandatory:

(1) functionally one eyed (worse eye with best corrected vision < 20/50)

(2) history of previous serious eye injury

(3) history of ocular surgery

 

Features of effective physical eye protection:

(1) fitted for each wearer

(2) padded to keep goggles comfortable

(3) made of impact resistant material

(4) lenses securely anchored

(5) headband attachments to hold the frame securely

(6) wide field of view

(7) UV protection with outdoor activities
