A pregnant woman who travels by car should take a number of precautions to avoid possible complications.

deep vein thrombosis from prolonged immobility

limit travel to a maximum of 6 hours per day; stop car and walk 10 minutes every 2 hours; additional precautions needed if there is a history of hypercoagulability

worsening of nausea and vomiting

 

trauma from vehicular accident

use 3-point restraint positioned properly over lower abdomen; consider sitting in back seat provided there is adequate leg room

• Sitting the back seat may have a number of risks and benefits. Rear seats tend to be smaller and more cramped. However, the front seat may be more dangerous in an accident and may expose the passenger to air bag deployment.
