Description

Occasionally a patient with a history of gnathostomiasis will have a "recall" reaction secondary to some immune stimulus.

Features:

(1) history of gnathostomiasis with typical skin lesions

(2) appearance of a inflammatory nodule at the site of a previous parasitic nodule following an insect bite or other stimulus, with the skin reaction far out of proportion to the stimulus

(3) no evidence of reinfection or persistent infection wtih gnathosomiasis as the cause

The proposed mechanism is stimulation of T cells and other inflammatory cells left at the site of the resolved nodule, with release of cytokines.
