Bradley et al reported risk factors for readmission of a patient receiving outpatient parenteral antibiotic therapy (OPAT). The authors are from the University of Mississippi and the George Washington University.
Patient selection: discharged on outpatient parenteral antibiotic therapy.
Outcome: 30-day unplanned readmission
Prevalence of readmission in study population: 20%
Half of the patients were readmitted for a non-OPAT related reason.
Reasons for readmission related to OPAT:
(1) vascular access related complication (PICC, central line, etc)
(2) adverse drug reaction, including drug accumulation
(3) status of original infection (incision and drainage; wound dehiscence; progression)
(4) new infection
On multivariate analysis chronic kidney disease (OR 2.8) was identified as a predictor for readmission.
