Description

Some cases of aplastic anemia are immune-mediated. These patients may be treated with immunosuppressive therapy. Other patients with aplastic anemia may be treated by bone marrow transplant. These therapies can trigger reactivation of latent Chagas disease.

Patient selection: patient in region endemic for Chagas disease with reactivity to ELISA and IFA immunoassays, status post therapy for aplastic anemia

Reactivation Chagas disease is a serious disease, especially in a vulnerable patient with aplastic anemia on immunosuppression therapy.

Monitoring is done with real-time PCR.

If the PCR shows a rise in T. cruzi parasitemia, then antiparasitic drug can be started to prevent clinical disease.
