Sorbitol may be present as an excipient in drug preparations. A patient with hereditary fructose intolerance may have a serious reaction to sorbitol.
Patient selection: hereditary fructose intolerance
Risk factors:
(1) exposure to a large amount of sorbitol (PRAXBIND contains 4 grams per dose)
(2) intravascular infusion
Adverse effects that may occur:
(1) hypoglycemia
(2) hypophosphatemia
(3) metabolic acidosis
(4) hyperuricemia
(5) acute liver failure
(6) death
