Description

Gonzales et al used a ratio of lipoproteins to identify patients with hypertriglyceridemia who may be at risk for pancreatitis. The authors are from the Mayo Clinic.

Patient selection: serum hypertriglyceridemia (> 500 mg/dL)

Outcomes: episodes of pancreatitis

Parameters:

(1) serum triglyceride concentration

(2) serum apolipoprotein B concentration

ratio =

= (serum triglyceride) / (apolipoprotein B)

Interpretation:

The results may show a range of values.

A ratio < 10.6 is associated with a low probability of developing pancreatitis (1.5%), with a negative predictive value of 98.5%

Performance:

The area under the ROC curve is 0.87.
