Ren et al used the ratio of the serum C-reactive protein to the Prognostic Nutritional Index to predict mortality for an elderly patient undergoing hip fracture surgery. The authors are from Fudan University in Shanghai, China.
Patient selection: elderly (most patients in their 80's) undergoing hip fracture surgery
Outcome: 1-year mortality rate
Parameters:
(1) serum C-reactive protein (CRP) in mg/L
(2) Prognostic Nutritional Index (PNI) of Onodera et al
ratio of CRP to PNI =
= (CRP) / (PNI)
Interpretation
• A ratio > 0.10 was associated with 100% mortality in the study population.
• A ratio <= 0.10 was associated with a 7% mortality rate in the study population
