Eloubeidi et al used the ratio of the pancreatic duct to the gland by ultrasonography to predict pancreatic cancer. The authors are from the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
Analysis: endosonography
Parameters:
(1) pancreatic duct caliber in mm (PD)
(2) pancreatic gland diameter in mm (G)
PDG ratio =
= (diameter of pancreatic duct) / (diameter of the gland)
In the study the patients with pancreatic cancer had higher duct diameter and smaller gland diameters.
Interpretation:
• A ratio >= 0.34 suggests pancreatic cancer.
Performance:
• Positive predictive value: 87%
• Negative predictive value: 99%.
• The sensitivity was 94% and specificity 97%.
