Description

Eloubeidi et al used the ratio of the pancreatic duct to the gland by ultrasonography to predict pancreatic cancer. The authors are from the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

Analysis: endosonography

Parameters:

(1) pancreatic duct caliber in mm (PD)

(2) pancreatic gland diameter in mm (G)

PDG ratio =

= (diameter of pancreatic duct) / (diameter of the gland)

In the study the patients with pancreatic cancer had higher duct diameter and smaller gland diameters.

Interpretation:

A ratio >= 0.34 suggests pancreatic cancer.

Performance:

Positive predictive value: 87%

Negative predictive value: 99%.

The sensitivity was 94% and specificity 97%.
