The radical neck dissection (RDN) is an aggressive resection of structures in the neck, while the modified radical neck dissection (MRDN) is less so.
A radical neck dissection (RND) removes:
(1) lymph nodes at levels I through V
(2) any other lymph nodes between:
(2a) inferior border of mandible (superior),
(2b) contralateral anterior belly of the digastric muscle, hyoid bone and lateral border of sternohyoid muscle (medial),
(2c) clavicle (inferior), and
(2d) anterior border of trapezius muscle (posterior)
(3) internal jugular vein
(4) sternocleidomastoid muscle
(5) spinal accessory nerve
A modified radical neck dissection spares one of the 3 non-nodal structures (3, 4 or 5 above).
There are 8 possible combinations for preserving these structures.
