Description

Rachacha is a form of opiate abuse that tends to occur where poppy plants are readily available. Its use goes back to ancient times.

Rachacha is a paste made from decoction of poppy heads. This can be made into small balls that are swallowed. It takes some time for the opiates to be absorbed.

The subsequent intoxication is related to intestinal absorption of morphine and codeine.

Side effects may include anorexia and constipation. Fatalities can occur if the rachacha is abused in conjunction with alcohol or other respiratory depressants.

Drug testing shows morphine and codeine and their metabolites. The presence of 6-acetylmorphine or other opiates is not seen with rachacha ingestion by itself.
