Anastassiades et al reported the QuEchERS (quick, easy, cheap, effective, rugged and safe) method to extract pesticides, toxins and other chemicals from produce and other sources.
Method:
(1) Single phase extraction of sample (10 g) with 10 mL acetonitrile (MeCN).
(2) Liquid-liquid partitioning with addition of 4 g anhydrous MgSO4 and 1 g NaCl.
(3) Dispersive solid-phase extraction of 1 mL of acetonitrile extract using 150 mg of anhydrous MgSO4 and 25 mg primary secondary amine (PSA) sorbent.
where:
• The 3rd step removes both water and polar matrix compounds (organic acids, pigments, sugars).
An aliquot of the extract can be used for GC/MS.
