Description

Quetiapine is an atypical antipsychotic agent that may be associated with a discontinuation or withdrawal reaction.

Approved use: schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, acute mania

Features of quetiapine discontinuation syndrome:

(1) The person has been chronically using quetiapine, either under prescription or by abuse.

(2) There is the onset of bothersome symptoms when its use is stopped, especially if done so abruptly.

(3) Re-exposure to the drug reverses the withdrawal symptoms.

Symptoms may include:

(1) anxiety

(2) agitation

(3) movement disorder

A person who abuses quetiapine may also be abusing alcohol or other drugs. Complete discontinuation of all substances being abused can result in a mixed withdrawal reaction.
