Description

A patient with cirrhosis may retain excess fluid as edema or ascites. The quantity of retained fluid may be described relative to "dry" body weight.


Parameters:

(1) current body weight in kilograms

(2) minimum body weight in kilograms

 

The minimum body weight is the body weight after diuresis and with ascites absent.

 

quantity of retained fluid in kilograms =

= (current body weight) - (minimum body weight)

 

quantity of retained fluid as fraction of minimum body weight =

= (quantity of retained fluid) / (minimum body weight)
