Description

The quality of life for a patient with lipodystrophy may be affected as the disease progresses over time. A patient with severe lipodystrophy may be significantly affected.


 

Issues affecting cosmetic appearance:

(1) areas of subcutaneous fat loss

(2) areas of subcutaneous fat accumulation, including Cushingoid appearance

(3) hirsutism and hyperandrogenism in females

(4) acanthosis nigricans

 

Comorbid conditions that may occur:

(1) diabetes mellitus, especially if difficult to control

(2) pancreatitis

 

A person with lipodystrophy may be affected:

(1) when the cosmetic changes can be seen by others

(2) if the cosmetic changes interfere with work

(3) if the cosmetic changes interfere with intimate relationships

(4) if the cosmetic changes interfere with social activities

(5) if the person is self-conscious about his or her appearance

(6) if comorbid conditions cause pain or restrict lifestyle
