Description

A patient with Parry Romberg Syndrome may experience a poor quality of life that depends on the severity of the condition and the culture.

The patient experiences the loss of tissue on one side (left or right) of the face with loss of subcutaneous fat, muscle and bone. The overlying skin may also show hyperpigmentation. The loss of tissues may be rapid or gradual.

The severity of the deformity tends to be worse if the condition has an early onset.

Factors affecting quality of life:

(1) severity of the deformity

(2) severity of other symptoms (neuralgia, migraine, epilepsy, ocular involvement)

(3) social stigma

(4) interference with mastication and speech and other disabilities

(5) ability to correct defects by surgery or other interventions
