Description

De Havenon et al reported the PUPPI score for predicting persistent motor impairment of the upper extremity after an ischemic stroke. The authors are from multiple institutions in the United States.

PUPPI is an acronym for persistent upper extremity impairment.

Parameters:

(1) age of the patient in years

(2) worse NIHSS for the arms (motor), from 0 to 4

(3) worse NIHSS for the leg (motor), from 0 to 4

(4) NIHSS for facial palsy, from 0 to 3

(5) total NIHSS, from 0 to 42

Interpretation:

• minimum score: 0

• maximum score: 5

• A score >= 3 is positive for persistent upper extremity motor impairment at 90 days.

Performance:

• The area under the ROC curve is 0.75.
