Description

Candida albicans or other Candida species can rarely cause a pulmonary mycetoma.

The mycetoma may take the form of:

(1) colonization of a pre-existing cavity

(2) formation of a mass lesion that may be confused with lung cancer

Diagnostic features:

(1) There is often a history of immunosuppression or hematologic malignancy.

(2) No other diagnosis can explain the findings.

(3) Evidence of Candida species associated with the lung lesion.

(4) Improvement following appropriate antifungal therapy.
