Description

Tranexamic acid is an antifibrinolytic drug this may be used to reduce bleeding associated with trauma, surgery or other cause. While relatively safe it can raise the risk of thrombosis in some patients.

Chemical structure: trans-4-(aminomethyl)cyclohexamecarboxylic acid

Risk factors for thromboembolus in a patient being treated with tranexamic acid:

(1) excessive dose of tranexamic acid

(2) another reason for low fibrinolytic activity

(3) marked increase in hypercoagulability

(4) prolonged therapy with tranexamic acid
