Description

Vitamin B12 deficiency can rarely cause a hematologic picture that can closely mimic thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP).

Vitamin B12 = cobalamin.

Features of pseudo-TTP:

(1) anemia with schistocytes

(2) elevated serum LDH

(3) thrombocytopenia

(4) increased platelet aggregation

(5) variable neutropenia

(6) low serum vitamin B12 concentration

(7) correction with vitamin B12 replacement

(8) exclusion of causes of TTP
