Description

Some people will claim disability caused by allergy to latex paint.

Latex allergy is associated with an allergy to natural rubber from the rubber tree (Hevea brasiliensis).

Latex paint does not contain natural rubber but rather synthetic compounds.

A patient with allergy to natural rubber should not react to the latex in paint. The patient could have multiple allergies, but only testing will identify target antigens.

Differential diagnosis:

(1) psychological issues (stress, depression, anxiety, etc)

(2) non-allergic sick building syndrome

(3) malingering

(4) allergy to something other than the paint
