Prussian blue is a dye that can be used in the treatment of thallium or cesium poisoning. It is of particular interest in therapy of the radioactive isotopes released from dirty or nuclear bombs.
Mechanism of action: It acts by ion-exchange in the gastrointestinal tract. Thallium and cesium are secreted into the gastrointestinal tract but are subsequently reabsorbed. Binding to Prussian blue prevents enteric reabsorption, with the toxins being excreted into the feces.
Adverse effects may include hyperkalemia (ion released during ion exchange) and constipation
Treatment with Prussian blue is usually performed in conjunction with charcoal hemoperfusion.
