Description

Prunes are dried plums with a number of beneficial features.

Prunes are a good source of

(1) potassium

(2) boron

(3) vitamin K1

Prunes have a laxative effect. The laxative effect is related to:

(1) high levels of sorbitol, which is a slowly-absorbed sugar that exerts an osmotic effect

(2) fructose content

(3) phenolic compounds (chlorogenic and neochlorogenic acids)

(4) high fiber (6 grams per 100 g)

The laxative effect is dose dependent (increases with the number of prunes ingested).

The non-absorbed sugars may be digested in the colon with gas formation and increased flatulence.

Prunes also have benefits in managing satiety. They have a sweet taste but do not cause a rapid rise in blood sugar.
