Description

Howes et al outlined how to determine if a patient with schizophrenia is adherent to therapy. Nonadherence to therapy can be misinterpreted as resistance to therapy. The authors participated in the Treatment Response and Resistance in Psychosis (TRRIP) Working Group.

Patient selection: schizophrenia on therapy

The goal of therapy is 100% compliance. The minimum level is >= 80% of prescribed doses over the treatment period (>= 12 weeks).

Measures of adherence - 2 or more of the following:

(1) pill count

(2) dispensing records from the pharmacy

(3) patient self-report

(4) reports of caregivers or staff

(5) unannounced serum drug level testing (minimum once, preferred >= 2 times separated by at least 2 weeks)
