Description

Falling objects are a hazard at a construction site. A number of steps can be taken to reduce the risk to workers from supplies or equipment striking them from above.

Protection from falling objects may involve:

(1) toeboards (see below)

(2) guardrail and screening (see below)

(3) proper storage of supplies and equipment (see below)

(4) canopies over workers below: should be strong enough to withstand anything falling onto it from above

(5) debris removal: performed at regular intervals to avoid accumulation

(6) control of any openings: should not be large enough to allow passage of objects

Toeboards:

(1) minimum 3.5 inches high

(2) no more than 0.25 inches above walkway

(3) able to withstand a force >= 50 pounds in a downward or outward direction

(4) solid or with openings <= 1 inch

Guardrail with screening should be placed:

(1) if supplies or equipment are piled higher than the toeboard

(3) if building supplies are used close to the edge

Storage:

(1) supplies should be stable and self-supporting

(2) supplies should be stored away from the edge of the working area if possible (at least 6 feet for roofing material; at least 4 feet for bricklaying)

All workers should wear hard hats just in case.
