Description

A home can be protected from a wildfire provided preventive measures are taken. These are most effective when taken well in advance of any risk.

General measures:

(1) preparing safety perimeters around the house that are free of combustible material

(2) protecting the house itself

(3) stockpiling water

First safety perimeter extending out 30 feet from the house

(1) Replace flammable plants with less flammable species.

(2) Prune trees, bushes and shrubs.

(3) Remove all combustible material on the ground, especially from under decks or porches.

(4) Remove vines attached to the house.

(5) Move shrubs close to the house further away.

(6) Keep gas grills and propane tanks at least 15 feet from the house.

Second safety perimeter extending from 31 to 100 feet around the house

(1) Remove as much flammable material as possible.

(2) Stack firewood uphill and at least 100 feet from the house.

(3) Replace flammable plants with less flammable species.

Third safety perimeter extending further out may be needed if the home is in a high risk area or on a hill.

Protecting the house:

(1) Cover vents and other openings with corrosion resistant wire mesh.

(2) Enclose the space beneath porches, sun decks and eaves.

(3) Use fire resistant material for roofing, siding and decks.

(4) Remove combustible debris from the roof and gutters.

(5) Protect windows with multi-pane thermal glass, fire resistant shutters and heavy drapes.

(6) Place spark arrestors over chimneys and stovepipes.

Stockpiling water for use to fight fires:

(1) swimming pools

(2) hot tubs

(3) barrels or garbage cans
