Description

Melanosis of the prostate is a rare condition.


Prostate tissue is grossly black or dark in color.

 

Histologic features:

(1) melanin pigment in glandular epithelium

(2) melanin pigment in the stroma

(3) absence of melanocytic proliferation

(4) benign histology

 

Concurrent prostatic hypertrophy or adenocarcinoma may be present.

 

Differential diagnosis:

(1) blue nevus of the prostate

(2) malignant melanoma

(3) hemosiderosis or hemochromatosis
