Ethylene oxide is used to sterilize hospital supplies. Unfortunately, it is a hazardous substance that must be handled carefully.

Advantages:

(1) sterilizes delicate items that are unable to be exposed to heat, moisture or harsh chemicals

(2) compatible with many materials

Disadvantages:

(1) The workplace must be environmentally monitored since toxic levels may be otherwise undetectable to users.

(2) Long-term use is associated with risk of cancer and allergy.

(3) Workers with potential exposure must be monitored.

(4) It is flammable and explosive.

(5) The liquefied form can cause chemical frostbite.

(6) The sterilization process is relatively slow.
