Description

Namekawa and Kuriyama identified first-degree atrioventricular (AV) block as a risk factor for perioperative bradyarrhythmia. This finding may be associated with a worse outcome following surgery. The authors are from Kurashiki Hospital in Okayma, Japan.

Patient selection: first-degree atrioventricular block

Outcome: perioperative bradyarrhythmia

Risk factors for progressive first-degree AV block:

(1) older age

(2) opioid therapy

(3) succinylcholine

(4) neostigmine

(5) indigo carmine (intra-operative dye)

The presence of a gradual prolongation in the PR interval may be a warning sign for impending bradyarrhythmia.
