Description

Feldman et al reported prognostic scores for men with germ cell tumors (GCT). One score was for patients with brain metastases detected at the time of relapse (referred to as metachronous). The authors are from multiple institutions in Europe and North America.

Patient selection: male with brain metastases present at the time of relapse

Parameters:

(1) number of brain metastases

(2) metastases to liver and/or bone

(3) serum AFP and HCG concentrations

where:

• A low serum AFP was <= 100 ng/mL.

• The method for analysis and the reference range for AFP were not given but from Table 1 the reference range is inferred as being <= 10 ng/mL.

• A low serum HCG was <= 5,000 IU/L.

• The method for analysis and the reference range for HCG were not given but from Table 1 the reference range is inferred as being <= 10 IU/L.

= SUM(points for all 3 parameters)

Interpretation:

• minimum score: 0

• maximum score: 3

• The higher the score the worse the overall prognosis.
