Description

Yaghoubian et al developed a simple model for predicting the risk of mortality in a patient with a necrotizing soft tissue infection based on admission laboratory values. These can help identify a patient who may benefit from more aggressive management. The authors are from Harbor-UCLA Medical Center and the Los Angeles Biomedical Research Institute.

Parameters:

(1) admission serum lactate

(2) admission serum sodium

Admission Lactate

Admission Sodium

Mortality Rate

>= 54.1 mg/dL

NA

32%

< 54.1 mg/dL

>= 135 mmol/L

0%

< 54.1 mg/dL

< 135 mmol/L

19%

Performance:

• The sensitivity was 100% and specificity 28%.

• The negative predictive value was 100% and the positive predictive value 23%
