Description

Zeitoun et al developed a prognostic index for patients with the Budd-Chiari Syndrome. This can help identify patients who may benefit from more aggressive management. The authors are from Colombes and Clichy in France.

Parameters:

(1) ascites score

(2) Child-Pugh score (ranges from 5 to 15)

(3) age in years

(4) serum creatinine in µmol/L

Ascites

Points

absent

1

readily treated

2

intractable

3

prognostic index =

= (0.75 * (points for ascites)) + (0.28 * (Child Pugh score)) + (0.037 * (age in years)) + (0.0036 * (serum creatinine))

Interpretation:

• The higher the index the worse the prognosis.

Prognostic Index

Prognosis

<= 5.4

good

> 5.4

poor
