Citterio et al identified factors associated with liver decompensation following resection of an hepatocellular carcinoma. The authors are from Istituto Nazionale Tumori in Milan , University of Foggia and Azienda Ospedaliera Universitaria Ospedali Riuniti.

Patient selection: hepatic resection of a hepatocellular carcinoma

Outcomes: hepatic decompensation, liver-related mortality

Parameters:

(1) portal hypertension (at least F1 esophageal varices OR (platelet count < 100,000 per µL AND splenomegaly)
