Yildirim et al reported prognostic factors for a patient with mesenteric ischemia. This can help to identify a patient with a worse prognosis. The authors are from Haseki Training and Research Hospital, Istanbul Training and Research Hospital, and Lutfiye Nuri Burat State Hospital in Istanbul.
Patient selection: mesenteric ischemia
Common symptoms: abdominal pain; nausea and vomiting
Less common symptoms: hematemesis; melena
Predictors of a better outcome:
(1) early diagnosis and treatment
(2) Mannheim Peritonitis Index (MPI)
(3) prevention of complications
(4) intensive care following surgery
(5) anastomosis performed (stomas tended to be performed in patients with more severe disease)
