Yi et al reported prognostic factors for geriatric patients with burns. These factors can help to predict in-hospital mortality. The authors are from the University of Chicago.
Patient selection: age >= 50 years
Outcome: in-hospital morality
Prognostic factors included:
(1) age
(1a) 75-84 years (OR 3.9)
(1b) >= 85 years (OR 11.9)
(2) percent total burn surface area
(2a) 10-19% (OR 2.9)
(2b) >= 20% (OR 27.8)
(3) intentional burn (OR 7.9)
(4) respiratory distress or failure (OR 5.8)
(5) aspiration pneumonia/pneumonitis (OR 5.0)
(6) shock (OR 4.6)
(7) acute renal failure (OR 2.9)
Protective factors:
(1) burn caused by hot liquids or vapors (OR 0.33)
(2) 1 or more surgical excisions (OR 0.26)
