Description

Tsai et al reported risk factors for a poor prognosis in a patient with necrotizing fasciitis caused by a Vibrio species. The patient may benefit from more aggressive management, including early surgical debridement. The authors are from Chang Gung Memorial Hospital in Taiwan.

Factors associated with a poor prognosis for a patient with Vibrio necrotizing fasciitis:

(1) systolic blood pressure <= 90 mm Hg at the time of admission

(2) hypoalbuminemia

(3) severe thrombocytopenia

(4) leukopenia

(5) elevated percent of band forms in the peripheral blood smear differential count

The authors found that the LRINEC scoring system was not applicable for Vibro-related necrotizing fasciitis.
