Sioutos et al reported prognostic factors for a patient with a solid tumor metastatic to the spinal column. The authors are from Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City.
Patient selection: solid tumor metastatic to the spine
Poor prognostic factors:
(1) muscle strength in the legs 0 to 3 out of 5 on British MRC scale
(2) lung or colon cancer
(3) metastases to multiple vertebral bodies

In the study by Leithner et al, the 2 groups were similar for the first 48 months. After that the palliative care group all died, versus a 15% longer term survival in the surgery group.
