Description

Singer et al identified a number of prognostic factors for a patient with a retroperitoneal liposarcoma. These can help to identify a patient who may benefit from more aggressive management. The authors are from Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City.

Patient selection: retroperitoneal liposarcoma without distant metastases following resection

Poor prognostic findings:

(1) dedifferentiated liposarcoma

(2) incomplete resection (margin classified as R2)

(3) resection of an adjacent/contiguous organ (excluding the kidney)

(4) age >= 63

where:

• Dedifferentiated liposarcomas tend to occur in older adults >= 63 years of age.

• Margins are referred to as R0 (macroscopically negative, microscopic margin >= 1.0 mm), R1 (macroscopically negative, microscopic margin < 1.0 mm) and R2 (macroscopically positive).
