Description

Saracoglu et al identified prognostic factors for a patient with electrical burns. The authors are from Kartal Dr. Lutfi Kirdar Training and Research Hospital and Mardin Kiziktepe State Hospital in Turkey.

Patient selection: electrical burn

Major causes of death:

(1) multiple organ failure

(2) infection

Prognostic factors:

(1) total body surface area burned >= 25% (odds ratio 2.8; for >=50% odds ratio 18.9)

(2) high voltage injury (odds ratio 5.1)

(3) poor initial resuscitation

(4) elevated serum CK and CK-MB (rhabdomyolysis)

Prognostic factors related to multi-organ failure:

(5) prolonged stay in the ICU (odds ratio 1.06 per day)

(6) intubation (indicative of respiratory failure)

(7) renal failure with need for hemofiltration (odds ratio 12)
